Abstract:This study explains why healing gardens are returning to many medical facilities in the United States after an absence dating back to the early 20th century. It discusses the evidence, informed mostly by the methodology of the social sciences, that exposure to gardens and other types of spaces such as parks and nature preserves, has positive health benefits. Such exposure can relieve stress, improve cognitive ability, and produce positive measurable health outcomes. The article also recounts various theories of how and why gardens work to improve health, but notes that researchers disagree on this issue. It also makes the case that healing gardens should be designed by teams of specialists to meet the needs of patients and staff in specific medical settings, such as a cancer hospital or a facility for dementia sufferers. It concludes by briefly suggesting a research agenda that should improve the ability to design more effective healing gardens.
